SGTM built its own cement plant, “Novacim,” in Ouled Ghanem, south of El Jadida. Launched in 2018, this turnkey factory project aimed to give SGTM an independent cement production capacity to secure its supply chain. Commissioned in 2022, the plant required a total investment of around MAD 2.6 billion (financed with the African Development Bank – AfDB). SGTM handled the full project management: civil works for the installations (raw mill, 100 m preheater tower, 5,000 t/day rotary kiln, cement mills), erection of the steel structures (storage silos, clinker halls), and coordination of industrial commissioning in partnership with an equipment supplier (Vicat).
The plant has a capacity of 1.2 million tonnes of cement per year and incorporates advanced technology (fully automated plant, dust collection systems compliant with European standards). SGTM faced the challenge of building heavy infrastructure (foundations on compressible soil, a 7 km access road) while simultaneously training staff for operations. The project was carried out without any major accidents thanks to a strict HSE plan. In 2023, SGTM acquired 100% of Novacim’s capital, making it a strategic asset that integrates the group’s value chain in the construction sector.
