In a joint venture, SGTM carried out the works for the new Port of Safi (Phase 1), an infrastructure located 15 km south of Safi, primarily intended for coal imports to supply the nearby thermal power plant and for the export of phosphate fertilizers. The works, executed between 2013 and 2018, involved major maritime construction: building a main breakwater of approximately 2 km and a secondary breakwater, with a total of 4.5 million m³ of rockfill placed to protect the harbor basin, as well as the immersion of 687,562 m³ of prefabricated concrete (including blocks and arch segments) for quay caissons and the breakwater head.
SGTM also dredged 21 million m³ of sediment to excavate the basins (draft -18 m) and backfilled 20 million m³ to create storage yards. Given the low bearing capacity of the foundation soil, 162,524 m³ underwent improvement (ballasted columns) to stabilize the structures. SGTM then built the coal quay (350 m deep-water berth) and multipurpose quay, designed to handle vessels of up to 120,000 DWT.
With a total investment of around MAD 4 billion, the port received its first coal vessel in 2018. SGTM’s performance on this project — meeting deadlines despite Atlantic swells and managing a 1,000-person worksite camp under strict safety conditions — confirms its expertise in large-scale maritime works.
