The Loukkous viaduct, crossing the Loukkos River near Larache, is the second-longest structure on the Tangier–Kénitra high-speed rail line, with a total length of 2,256 m. Built by SGTM, this viaduct comprises 40 piers and a 12 m-wide deck carrying the double-track high-speed line.
The foundations are exceptional: each pier rests on a group of bored piles 67 m long and 1.6 m in diameter—among the longest piles in Africa for this type of structure. SGTM deployed very high-capacity drilling rigs to install these piles in deep alluvial soils and poured over 50,000 m³ of foundation concrete under bentonite.
The deck was executed in multiple segments, cast in place on movable falsework shifted as construction progressed. The viaduct alignment follows a curved plan matching the high-speed line’s ~200 km/h track geometry. SGTM adhered to extremely tight alignment tolerances (within a few millimeters) to meet the stiffness requirements for ballasted high-speed rail.
Commissioned in 2018, the Loukkous viaduct crosses the wetlands of the Loukkos River without disturbing them, thanks to carefully planned works scheduled during low-water periods.
