The Lalla Takerkoust Dam, located about 35 km southwest of Marrakech on the Oued N’Fiss, is a concrete gravity dam originally built between 1929 and 1935. To support the expansion of irrigated perimeters in the Haouz region, the structure was raised by 9 m between 1978 and 1980. SGTM participated in these heightening works, which brought the total height to approximately 60 m above the foundations.
The project involved extending the existing dam with 6 massive additional blocks on each side (right and left banks) and raising the central blocks, reinforced by 280 prestressed anchor ties (8,000 linear meters in total) to stabilize the structure. As a result, the reservoir capacity increased from 34 to about 60 million m³. This upgrade boosted irrigation capacity to 9,800 ha and annual hydroelectric production to 15 GWh.
The works, carried out while maintaining continuous downstream water supply, required precise phasing and enhanced safety measures (foundations anchored into bedrock, adaptation of the existing spillway). Since 1980, the Lalla Takerkoust Dam has reliably contributed to both irrigation in the Haouz and regional power supply.
