The Lahlou viaduct, located in the Mharhar Valley, is a 400 m long high-speed rail structure. It has the particularity of crossing 40 m above the existing Tangier–Port Med conventional railway line. SGTM built this viaduct while ensuring uninterrupted rail traffic below, using a balanced cantilever construction method.
The prestressed concrete deck, weighing approximately 10,000 tonnes, was installed by incremental launching from the abutments over the existing line, using a system of jacks and PTFE bearing sliding supports. This delicate operation was carried out at night with millimetric precision, demonstrating the skill of SGTM’s teams.
The viaduct rests on eight slender piers equipped with seismic bearings. The works required significant access earthworks and the creation of tracks for the launching cranes. Completed in 2014, the Lahlou viaduct ensures the continuity of the high-speed line while minimizing the impact on conventional rail operations during construction.
