In a joint venture, SGTM built the Grand Théâtre de Rabat, a major architectural landmark designed by Zaha Hadid. Located on the banks of the Bouregreg River facing the Hassan Tower, this 25,000 m² cultural complex includes a large indoor theatre with 1,800 seats (the largest in Africa) and an outdoor amphitheatre with 7,000 open-air seats. Works began in 2014 and were completed in 2021.
SGTM implemented innovative construction methods to achieve the building’s fluid and curved forms, characterized by a futuristic white architectural concrete envelope. The main hall’s structure, free of intermediate pillars, required large-span steel frameworks and carefully executed prestressed concrete for the seating tiers. Coordination with international acoustics and stage design specialists was essential to integrate creation studios, a secondary modular theatre with 520 seats, and advanced stage equipment (600 m² stage, sophisticated machinery).
SGTM also developed the surroundings (forecourt, parking) over an area of approximately 7 hectares. Despite delays due to the project’s complexity and the Covid-19 pandemic, the works were successfully completed. With a total cost of around MAD 2 billion, the Grand Théâtre is awaiting its official inauguration in 2023 and is already considered a cultural symbol of Rabat, featured on the country’s new banknotes.
