As part of Africa’s first High-Speed Rail (HSR) line linking Tangier to Kenitra (200 km), SGTM executed major works on the northern section. The group built 4 railway viaducts with a total length of 6,586 m in a record time of 3 years. Among these were the El Hachef viaduct (3.5 km) and the Loukkous viaduct (2,256 m), the two longest bridges of the project.
SGTM faced significant technical challenges: deep foundations in wet ground (bored piles reaching depths of up to 70 m at El Hachef), wind risk management (gusts of up to 170 km/h on the El Hachef site), and maintaining traffic on existing infrastructure (such as the Lahlou viaduct built above an active railway line). The company implemented innovative long-span deck launching techniques (the 400 m Lahlou bridge was assembled without interrupting rail traffic) and deployed exceptional lifting equipment.
Despite these constraints, the structures were delivered in compliance with HSR standards (operating speed of 320 km/h) and contributed to the launch of Africa’s first TGV service at the end of 2018.
